So, you’ve found out that you are expecting a bouncing baby boy or girl. Wonderful news! You have my most heartfelt congratulations. Being a parent is an amazing and rewarding journey, but it’s also one that is full of questions and decisions. Relax! You’ll get through it. And I hope that I can help make one decision a little bit easier for you to make. How to hire the right newborn photographer.
No matter your age, young mom or more mature mom, you’ve more than likely been exposed to newborn art. Whether by Anne Geddes, or Baby as Art, or maybe even a friend or family member who has had newborn photos taken. And if you have, you have probably also settled it in your mind that you are booking one of those sessions for your own baby. Congratulations on a great decision! (See, you just started this journey, and you are already making great decisions!)
But how do you know WHO to hire? Let me spell it out for you. I’ll give you the quick and the dirty, so you can find the perfect photographer for YOU!
1. Google is your friend! And so is Facebook. Search area photographers that specialize in newborns. Trust me on this one – Newborn photography is a whole lot more than laying a baby down on a blanket, followed by click – click – click. Newborn posing takes know-how and dedication. It truly is an art. So, look for photographers who feature images with well posed babies. Can you see the baby’s whole face, or is part of the baby’s face smooshed into the blanket? Does the baby look to have been worked with to get him relaxed and soothed into his pose, or does he look awkward or uncomfortable? And finally, you can ask the photographer how she has been educated on safe newborn handling, posing and soothing techniques, and how much experience she has working with newborns. You are planning to entrust your tiny new baby to this person for several hours. Be sure she knows what she is doing!
2. Take a good look through the photographer’s images in their portfolio or on their website. Do you adore their style, or does it not really mesh with your own personal aesthetics? In general, with a photographer who has an ample body of work to show, a potential client can get a really good feel for the style of images and processing they can expect. If you don’t love it, then keep looking. It is not likely to grow on you. I recommend looking for a photographer who displays a style that speaks to your heart. To your soul. These are going to be some of the most important images you will ever have taken. For this reason, I also recommend looking for a photographer who has a classic and clean looking style. Something that is not going to scream DATED to you in 18 or so years, when you display them at his graduation. Something that will always be beautiful and transport you back to that amazing newborn scent, those tiny fingers and toes, his downy-soft hair.
3. Don’t be entirely swayed by price. Now, I realize that cost and budget are going to weigh in on this decision, and that is completely understandable. But what I am recommending is that it be the final consideration, rather than the top priority. You can expect the more experienced and in-demand photographers to have higher pricing than newer photographers. And often, that will mean that you are paying not only for higher grade professional gear and props, but also for workshops, education, and expertise. You are also paying for peace of mind and the assurance that you have hired someone who is going to get the job done, and do so in a way that creates an amazing experience for you as well as beautiful images. I can’t tell you the number of clients who come to me in tears because they hired someone on the basis of cost, and do not have any beautiful images from their session. They end up paying MORE in the end, because they regret their decision and book another session with me. And it breaks my heart every time it happens. So, I highly recommend thinking of your newborn session as an investment for your family for generations to come, because you will truly be able to relive this experience over and over with your children. With their spouses. And with their own children. It’s not unlike purchasing quality furniture that you will be able to pass down to your children and grandchildren. Sometimes it is simply worth paying more.
Do remember that a very experienced newborn photographer will likely be working with a high client volume. Book early to be sure that they can reserve a spot for you in their schedule. Booking before your third trimester is probably good advice.
I truly hope this information helps you book your newborn session. And that years from now, you will have beautiful photos of one of the most amazing times in your life to show for it.

….because your baby is only this little once.
This is why I do what I do. Because in such a short time, your baby will be different. Bigger. More alert. The newness, the tininess – they only really last for the 1st 4 weeks. And then suddenly, your baby is not so much a newborn anymore. They somehow morph into this active little engaging baby. Almost overnight, it seems. The newborn period is an amazing and fleeting stage of your child’s life. They are so new. So pure. So perfect.
So please, take the time to have newborn photos taken. If newborn photos are important to you and you see the value of having a professional capture this time, then hire a photographer that you trust for your newborn session. Someone with experience, and the images to show for it, whose style you connect with. Someone who loves working with babies. Newborn sessions and posing are HARD! Trust me on this. You want to entrust your time and money to someone who can get you the images and poses that you envision. You want to really feel that you can trust your photographer. You should get the feel from their images that they absolutely know what they are doing, and that your baby is literally in capable hands.
And if you are not really interested in a professional newborn session, well then, my advice is to take plenty of pictures yourself. And maybe have someone else take a few photos of you together with your baby. Because regardless of whether you want to be in photos or not, one day you are going to look back and be glad that you have them. And so will your child.
In the end, what really matters most is that parents soak all that wonderful newborn-ness in and bond with their babies. Photos just help us to remember and celebrate all that was so amazing about having a brand new baby. This is something that you as a parent will only appreciate more as time goes on. But don’t underestimate how wonderful it is for a child to have photos of life when he or she was tiny, too.

Are you expecting? Book your newborn session early. The schedule fills up so quickly, and last minute spots are hard to come by. I recommend booking your session before you have had your baby, and scheduling for a date within 1 week of your due date. Booking early guarantees a spot in my schedule for your newborn. Because due dates are rarely set in stone, we can adjust the date if necessary.

The answer is very simple – as big as you can afford. Really. If you are purchasing a gallery wrapped canvas, the size will determine whether it pales in comparison to your surroundings, swallowed in blank wall space or lots of other photos, or whether it shines on its own. A work of art that adds beauty and meaning to your space. And I can honestly say that I have never had a client convey to me that they were sorry that they purchased a larger print or canvas, while I regularly hear from clients who wish they had gone larger. I recommend purchasing the largest canvas you can afford for that reason.

Which one looks better to you? I think we have a natural tendency to overestimate print size, so I make reference charts for my clients, to take the guesswork out of the decision making process.
Smaller canvases can look amazing, too. They are wonderful in smaller areas, or grouped together, as in the following image.
As photographers, our goal should be to bring your images to reality, helping you to group them and display them on your walls. Please do not hesitate to make clear to your photographer what you have in mind, what size of area(s) you are looking to fill with your images, and anything else that you feel we should know in order to make it happen. We want you surrounded by your own meaningful artwork. Images of your loved ones, your life and your moments.

I cannot even describe how much this family has come to mean to me. I’m so amazed and encouraged by their faith, their love, and their family. And I feel so honored to have been selected to photograph their pregnancy, their birth, and their newborn. What an incredible gift! One thing I love about specializing in the maternity, birth and newborn areas of photography is that I feel that I get the blessing of getting to know my clients as friends, maybe even like family. And that is so wonderful!
I also love that maternity photography is a beautiful way to document such an amazing time in your life, and in the lives of your family members. As a maternity photographer, I welcome the opportunity to bring your family together to celebrate the tiny life that God has blessed you all with. This is an important time for siblings, too! And location maternity sessions are a fantastic way to incorporate all of your loved ones in this momentous time, as well as catch some fun family moments.
Maternity photography is so much more than just belly photos. It’s a way to capture the emotion that wraps your pregnancy. It’s natural to want to document this time, and I love being able to do that for you, beautifully. And it provides such a great beginning to images that contain even more emotion and connection.
I think birth is beautiful. A new life entering the world. Opening her eyes for her first glimpse of this new place, often while still partially inside her mother. The mother’s powerful rush of love for her new baby. It’s raw and powerful and beautiful, and the images convey such incredible meaning and honesty. I think it’s incredible that God gives women such an amazing role – that of nurturing a life inside of us. And getting to be there to see and document that life as it emerges and is swiftly embraced is an incomparable gift.
(I love that little squishy face!)
It’s no wonder that by the time we photograph the newborn session, I feel that these people are my family. I’ve seen them laugh together and be tender together. I’ve seen them work together and endure pain together. And I’ve seen the most incredible relief and joy wash across their faces. I’ve seen the immediate and overwhelming love for their child and each other. (Excuse me, I need to grab a tissue.) Life is truly so beautiful.
