Age Shouldn’t Matter… Even for Newborns

If you are like most parents of a newborn, you are probably pretty tired. Those first days and weeks can be a blur. And sometimes the hectic schedule that comes with a newborn means that other things become less of a priority, or are forgotten about altogether. Like newborn photos. Some parents have religious reasons for staying at home for this period. Some new moms may have more soreness than they expected, or sometimes life feels a bit overwhelming with a newborn. Whatever the reason, a professional newborn photographer should be able to work with you at any time in the first month (at least!) and provide you with beautiful images of your newborn. And over the past 6 years, we have worked with so many of these older babies that we confidently assure parents that beautiful newborn sessions are possible at our studio with newborns of any age.

4 weekers can still curl a bit!

The newborn period is considered by most to be the first 4 weeks, and it’s true that some poses are going to take a bit longer with a 4 or 5 week old baby than with one that is 8 or 10 days old. Some will not settle as easily, or tolerate as many transitions from one pose into another. Older newborns are also typically less able to curl up as much as a younger newborn. They are generally a bit more round in the middle, and are often just not as flexible. And because babies older than about 12 days do more flexing of their legs and backs, some poses are not recommended or attempted. As long as our clients understand that there are greater limitations, and are able to adjust their expectations, we are happy – no, we are MORE than happy to schedule their older newborn. Because when it comes down to it, we would rather our clients have those beautiful photos than none at all. We would rather work harder and make that happen, than to see even one client go without a session simply because their baby was a bit older.

Variety with an older newborn is absolutely possible, too!

Yes, I am still going to recommend that clients book their session with me BEFORE they have their babies. We often do get a bigger variety of curled-up poses, and parents have the assurance of having a session on the schedule, which is not always possible when someone contacts me after their baby has arrived. Sometimes there are openings, due to a reschedule or a baby who has decided not to arrive by his or her due date, but not always. (So, if you haven’t had your baby yet, right now would be a great time to shoot me an email. 😉 ) But if you’ve had your baby, and if life has gotten a bit crazy for you with a newborn in the home, well go ahead and contact me! I will do my very best to make a spot for your precious baby. He or she deserves beautiful newborn photos, too. Your baby is only this little once.

This baby was 4 weeks old at her session. I still recommend getting them to my studio earlier, if at all possible.

Newborn Photography – Your Baby’s First Treasured Photos

Congratulations! You are expecting a new baby, or maybe your baby is already here, and that is wonderful news! This is such a wondrous and exciting time! Not to mention that it can be a bit nerve-wracking and tiring. But hey, you’ll slip into the new normal in no time. In the meantime, one of the best things you can do is schedule a newborn session for your little one, ideally to take place before he or she is 2 weeks old. But even if your baby is a little older, don’t fear, it’s never too late, so don’t scrap the idea altogether. If you are able, though, it’s just really best to get them done before 2 weeks if at all possible.

Those photos when your baby is so little are just indescribably precious. Booking your newborn session with Patricia Wade Photography ensures that you will receive a variety of images and poses, regardless of the package that you purchase. I have specialized in newborn photography for the past 6 years, because I truly love working with newborns. A huge bonus is that this experience means that the session is usually just about as calm and enjoyable as it could possibly be. I want every client to be able to relax in the knowledge that they have hired a photographer who is capable of getting the technical aspects right, who has loads of backgrounds, props, blankets, wraps and more, who can pose their baby for a variety of endearing images, and who also cares about their baby and truly enjoys the privilege of working with their tiny baby. Because that’s exactly what it is – a privilege. Thank you for choosing me, and entrusting your precious bundle to my care for his or her first photos.

Due to high demand, availability is limited, and it is never too early to book your newborn session. Contact me to book your newborn’s first photos today: [email protected]
